“Old Glory” Begins Its Journey of Remembrance at the USS Arizona
Memorial and the USS Oklahoma Memorial on December 7. The six
month journey of the flag through 25 historic memorial sites honoring
many generations of American Veterans will end on Memorial Day with the
flag flying over the US Capitol.
PEARL HARBOR, HAWAII - The White House Commission on Remembrance,
together with the Pearl Harbor Memorial Fund and its partners,
National Park Service, Department of Veterans Affairs, and the
Department of the Army, are pleased to announce the kickoff of Old
Glory’s Journey of Remembrance.
The six- month journey of the flag will begin in Pearl Harbor , Hawaii
on December 7, 2007, the 66th Anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor
. The Stars and Stripes will then travel across the country to honor the
sacrifices of fallen patriots and to promote the National Moment of
Remembrance.
The flag will first be flown over the USS Arizona Memorial. A concurrent
Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony, with a planned live video feed to the
USS Arizona Memorial, will take place at the U. S. Capitol in Washington
, D.C. Later that day, the flag will be flown over the new USS Oklahoma
Memorial at Pearl Harbor.
Our nation’s flag will journey to over 20 states and a total of 25
different locations where it will fly over a significant memorial
site every Monday until Memorial Day 2008. Old Glory will be raised in
ceremonies at each site, memorializing and honoring the sacrifices of
brave Americans. This historic journey will include stops at 9 National
Cemeteries , one State Cemetery , Arlington National Cemetery , and 13
National Park Service sites as we Remember, Understand, and Honor these
heroes.
Old Glory will conclude its journey on May 26, 2008, Memorial Day, where
as its final tribute, will fly over the U.S. Capitol, honoring the
memory of many generations of selfless Americans who have sacrificed in
defense of our liberties and freedom. The National Moment of Remembrance
will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Memorial Day. As an act of national
unity, all Americans are encouraged to pause at that time and
reflect on the sacrifices made by those who gave their lives to serve
our great nation and to “live honoring America’s fallen.”
